As usual, the technology has taken another forward leap and we are witnessing a further decrease in the size of computers. Our generation has seen so fast changes in computers that within a short span of time, from a nascent stage, the IT industry has reached a matured stage and still we can’t say whether it’s going to stabilize here.

From Mainframes to Mini Computers … on to Micro Computers or our very own Personal Computer still going on and we had laptops or notebooks. Now we have reached a stage when we are talking of Mini Notebooks or small laptops or the Net books.
The big question is whether there is any room for these Mini Notebooks in a market that is already crowded by scores or brands selling high-tech machines that use latest software and are more and more hungry for memory and other hardware resources. Can these small laptops match the power of desktops or the laptops with latest configuration? What is the trade-offs between size, features and price? And do we have a market for these?
Before saying anything in favour or against, we would like to put some facts:
It was Asus Eee PC that pioneered the new generation of mini notebooks. Others who joined the race to capture this emerging market segment of mini notebooks or Ultra portables or UMPCs include HP, MSI Wind, Toshiba, Viliva, Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo, LG, Samsung, Acer, Everex, Packard Bell, Elonex etc. to name a few. Each of them has a more than one range of these mini notebooks, which have a display screen of 7"-10" size. All of these companies are financially very strong and have successful track records. All of them have multinational presence and marketing/dealer network across all major cities in the world. Add to that the marketing budget each of them would be setting aside for their product promotions, campaigns, advertisements etc.
Now where is the demand? The demand is a latent demand that would come out once these companies start positioning their products for the targeted market segment. These "mini-notebooks" have distinct sizes, weights, and features that separate them from the other small notebooks on the market. When Elonex declares the intents to provide cheapest small notebooks in the UK and declare their mission to improve computer literacy in the country, they are obviously targeting the student segment by selling a £ 99 machine. Now they want that every student, even financially weaker one should be able to have Elonex One. Demand is already created…
Secondly, these mini notebooks are targeting the business travelers and provide them with the entire necessary feature they have in their PCs but some compromises have been made. These machines consume lesser power, provide Internet connectivity from anywhere, have a longer battery life and weigh much lesser as compared to traditional laptops. There small sizes make it easy to carry them anywhere.

Then, these are very economical as compared to available laptops in the market. Therefore, some potential buyers are bound to have a go at these. Moreover, when there is a free offer for example with Elonex Webbook, one is bound to turn head in disbelief and rush to the nearest seller to pick his/her free mini notebook.
Most importantly, all of these giant companies are bound to use all the means of pushing and pulling the products in the market. The sales are going to boom and we are on the verge of witnessing another paradigm shift where the computer is going to the personal…very-very personal again!
Benjamin Street has just spent the last 2 weeks researching online for the latest next generation laptops. Whilst doing this research he discovered the best place to get value for money when buying a new netbook To find out where to get the best deals on new laptops and netbooks.
