iPhone Dev team was working on the software unlock for iphone 3G since the 1st day iphone 3G came out in stores. Ans Dev team will be making the software public for free on news year 2009 eve. As prove of unlock Mccoy, a member of the Dev-Team has published a video of the actual unlocking.
For the time being, the method, codenamed yellowsn0w, requires command line operation, but the Dev-Team promises a nice looking graphical interface for inexperienced users. The tool will be available for download on New Year’s Eve. 3G or not 3G is no longer the question.
The Dev-Team are obviously planning on distributing the software via the unofficial third-party software repository Cydia, so you’ll need to jailbreak the iPhone first to gain access to it in the first place.
Unfortunately the only iPhones to benefit from the unlock, are those with baseband ver. 2.11.07 or earlier.
Here’s the proof that demonstrates the unlocking process with yellowsn0w. Enjoy!
